Collagen 101.

What is collagen, and why is it so important?

Collagen is a protein that provides structure to many parts of the body, including the skin. Together with elastin, collagen works to give skin its texture and shape. When collagen is abundant, skin is strong, hydrated, and appears youthful. Unfortunately, as we age, the body produces less—and lower quality—collagen. As a result, our skin becomes less firm and supple, and we begin to notice wrinkles, creases, and folds that make us look older and more tired.

Luckily, there are products and treatments that support and stimulate your body’s collagen production to maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin.

What are my options for boosting my collagen?

Microneedling

Microneedling is a safe way to help stimulate collagen production to treat fine lines, wrinkles, and even acne scars. By creating a series of tiny punctures or “micro wounds”, the treatment triggers the skin’s healing process, which results in increased collagen production. As it heals, the skin completely renews from deep within and appears smoother, firmer, and more radiant. At West Dermatology, we use the Eclipse MicroPen® EVO for the most advanced, comfortable microneedling treatments possible.

Ultherapy®

Ultherapy® is a unique skin tightening treatment that is Health Canada and FDA-approved to lift and tighten skin on the neck, chin and brow, and to improve lines and wrinkles on the upper chest. Using focused ultrasound technology, Ultherapy delivers heat directly to specific layers of the skin to activate the production of new collagen and elastin over a period of weeks and months. Following treatment, facial contours are redefined and the overall quality of the skin is improved.

Retinol

Retinol is a pure form of vitamin A. It’s an evidence-based, anti-aging powerhouse that, when used topically, stimulates collagen by “turning on” the cells responsible for making it. It works to exfoliate dull, damaged cells while stimulating new, healthy cells to restore natural hydration, minimize the appearance of wrinkles, and refine skin texture. It also enhances penetration of your at-home skincare products. Retinol products come in a variety of concentrations, and can require some guidance for skincare beginners. We carry a range of advanced retinol formulations from ZO Skin Health, and would be happy to help you select the perfect strength to incorporate into your routine.
